Breaking Trad!

Out with the old and in with the new. The old saying proves to be true yet again but this time it's for fashion myths. What do we mean by ‘myth?’ Well, we’re all familiar with fashion rules such as, “never wear black and brown,” or “don’t mix gold and silver jewelry,” or how about, “horizontal stripes make you look fat?” Yeah, those rules. Well we’re here to debunk those myths one by one starting with the classic myth, never mix and match prints.

Come on, who came up with that? Whoever did, didn’t know anything about fashion because we see mixed prints and patterns all the time. We see it on the catwalk, couture shows, and even on our busy city streets. We want to first say goodbye to this ridiculous rule and say hello to all of the prints and crazy patterns and the fun they bring to our wardrobe. We checked in with Bunny and Kailyn to see what they think about this crazy fashion myth and if we should keep it or bust it.

Bunny: I think it's so interesting to think about where the “rules'' of fashion come from? I know a lot of them are passed down from our grandmothers to our mothers and so on, but they had to originate somewhere, you know what I mean?

Kailyn: That’s so true. I never really grew up with any rules because my mom was so experimental and encouraged us to express ourselves in any way possible but I would always have friends who would criticize me if I mixed metals or even different prints. How do you feel about mixing prints?

Bunny: I think in some cases it can become quite chaotic but if you (ironically) follow certain guidelines it can really be something chic and eclectic but in a good stylish way. For example, when mixing prints and patterns it can be best to stick to a color scheme or a continuous pattern such as flowers or polka dots so that it doesn’t get too chaotic and busy.

Kailyn: Definitely! It’s like everything in moderation, right? I think finding a common “theme” of prints is a good rule of thumb when mixing patterns. To me, it’s a bit daunting and something I haven’t experimented too much with but I’ve seen others really pull it off. I think that choosing a base print or pattern such as stripes and then an accent print such as flowers like you said helps too. They balance each other out.

Bunny: Yes, I totally agree. It’s also a look where you must really commit to it. You can’t go half in on it or else it just looks incomplete and not like an intentional fashion statement.

Kailyn: I also think that when you’re mixing prints it’s good to have a solid accessory to break it up but to tie it together. For example, a waist belt with a striped shirt and floral skirt. The belt adds some stability and ties it all in.

Bunny: Yes or perhaps a solid scarf or hair band that is like a grounding accessory among all of the yummy chaos. Overall, I think that this idea of experimenting with prints and patterns is chic and fashion forward. I think that since in the winter its normal to layer clothing it’s going to be a great opportunity to try this styling out ourselves, what do you think? Will you try it?

Kailyn: You know what Bunny, I think I will ditch my all black ensemble and try some layering prints. I think it’s going to be a big trend this fall, and I want to be ahead of the game, haha!

Bunny: I look forward to it!
