Karlina Covington

We saw Karlina perform in San Diego a few years ago with LA-based group Vaud and the Villains and it was a riot. Picture a 15+ piece New Orleans themed musical show with beautiful, bewitching women with names like Peaches Mahoney and Sugar Cherie (Karlina). Then picture men decked out in waistcoats and top hats with big, strange-looking instruments. (We are referring to their trumpets, trombones and others of the sort ladies). Their mantra — every saint has a past. As Karlina hit notes that rattled the room, the rally cry was — put on your dancing shoes, pick up those frock tails and shake your tail feathers! And shake we did.

Karlina is a beautiful mixture of sweet and quirky with a splash of that I-don’t-give-a-f*** free spirit. Of course her calling is on the stage. This powerhouse has a voice of gold and she has been living the “LA dream” performing, songwriting and recording in California for the past few years. We’re so happy we got the chance to catch up with Karlina and we’re excited to share it with you. Please enjoy.

Describe yourself in 3 words.
Indecisive. As. F*ck.  (Meaning, I couldn’t decide which 3 words to list.)

Tell us a bit about the work you do and why you chose that field.
I’m a musician. Singer, performer, and songwriter. I can’t recall when I chose it. It just always was. I decided at a very young age that music is my thing and haven’t wavered in the 3+ decades that followed. I have other interests, but nothing does to me what music does.

“I WOULD TELL HER [MY 15-YEAR-OLD SELF] TO BE CRITICAL OF THE VOICES IN HER HEAD AND ASK HERSELF WHOM THEY BELONG TO.”

What advice would you give to your 15-year old self?
Stop trying to pop your pimples!  It will scar!  And practice piano!  But seriously, I would tell her to be critical of the voices in her head and ask herself whom they belong to.  15-year-old Karlina tried very hard to please the people around her and got so good at it that 30-something Karlina has a hard time letting go of what she thinks she’s supposed to be and just being who she is.

Best advice you ever received?
If regrets or frustrations ever try to rear their ugly heads, remember that at any point in your life, you were always doing the best you could.  So, be a little kinder to yourself.  This is a reason to be kinder to others, too.

Happiness is …?
Lying in bed, listening to chimes on a windy night.  Or a good belly laugh.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
The intersection of arrogance and ignorance.  And auto-flush toilets.  I’ll decide when I’m done!

Describe your go-to style.
Black. Lots of black. With bright color accents.

You feel most beautiful when …?
When I’m on stage.

“FASHION TELLS A STORY OF WHERE WE’VE BEEN, WHERE WE ARE, AND WHERE WE MIGHT GO.”

What does fashion mean to you"?
Fashion is so much more than just something to wear. It’s a way to capture a moment; a snapshot of a period in time. It’s a physical manifestation of our attitudes, values, and culture. Fashion tells a story of where we’ve been, where we are, and where we might go.
