San Francisco Culture

One thing our lovely city of San Francisco has is options. Options in restaurants, shopping and of course our favorite: museums. San Francisco is a hub for art and culture and even science! There are dozens of ways to explore and learn from this city and we think that museums are the best way to do so. We’ve rounded up a list of our top three favorite museums to visit in our city by the Bay.

Academy of Sciences

The California Academy of Sciences is a museum located in the beautiful Golden Gate Park. This museum is dedicated to hosting the most engaging and cutting edge exhibits that have to do with science and exploration. Complete with an aquarium, planetarium and even an indoor rainforest this museum is perfect for families and friends. Probably the most intriguing exhibit or should we say function is the Academy of Sciences NightLife. The NightLife event is an event that happens after the museum has closed for the day and is only open to 21+ guests. Purchase your tickets online to reserve your space to explore the museum after hours where you can explore the different exhibits while enjoying a nice alcoholic (or not) beverage. You can purchase your tickets online and keep in mind some of the exhibits that involve animals close at 7:45pm, so just make sure to buy your tickets accordingly. Also, bring your dancing shoes, the museum offers a live DJ to provide the soundtrack to your after hours exploring.

Legion of Honor

Craving that European old world museum experience? Look no further than the Legion of Honor. Here you can find exhibits of art such as painting and sculpture that you would find hanging in the greatest Parisian and Italian museums. Some artists you will find at the Legion are Rembrandt, Degas, Matisse and Monet among many others. You will also find that this multilevel museum offers free Saturday admission for all Bay Area residents! If you’re looking to potentially museum hop and decide to explore a neighboring museum, the DeYoung Museum, admission is free as long as you hold onto your Legion ticket and present it at the admissions counter. The Legion of Honor also hosts a chic and delicious cafe and outdoor terrace to enjoy lunch or a snack after taking in all that culture. Or, bring your own lunch and enjoy it on one of the benches that overlooks the golf course and view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands. Truly the gift that keeps on giving.

SF MOMA

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is located in the heart of SF’s downtown scene. Next to the Yerba Buena Garden and the Metreon, the SF MOMA is home to one of the largest collections of modern art in the United States. Tickets to those 18 and under are always free, no matter the day or time you decide to visit and offers rotating exhibits so you will always be exposed to new and exciting works of art. Artists such as Picasso, Calder and Warhol are housed in the SF MOMA. We would recommend visiting Floors 3, 5 and 7 to see the work of local artists and their physical material commentary on the Covid-19 pandemic. Or perhaps take a break outside on Floor 3 to take an Instagram perfect pic on the living wall that is home to over 19,000 plants. There’s also an outdoor cafe on Floor 5 where you can enjoy a coffee or a tea while admiring the outdoor sculptures and brisk San Francisco weather.
