Shoes That Are So Ugly…

You know those dogs that are so ugly that suddenly they’re cute? I think we all know dogs, and even some babies, that fit that description. What about ugly-cute fashion? We’ve noticed a big upheaval in “unattractive” fashion and whether you call it not dressing for the male gaze or a rebellion against traditional beauty, we are here for this trend and all of its ugliness. In addition to the beached brow trend and unconventional silhouettes we’ve also noticed the ugly-cute trend in footwear and we have some input...

So what makes a shoe so ugly that it's cute? We guess it all comes down to personal opinion in the end but we think it has a lot to do with shoe silhouette and shape. A good example of an ugly shoe that’s somehow become fashionably accepted is the croc. It’s bulky and the shape is less than flattering and that goes for everyone but somehow it’s kind of a serve in the fashion world. These rubber shoes were originally meant for function - you could wear them to work and be comfy your whole shift or you can wear them to the beach and rely on their durability in the sand and sea. Now, we find ourselves collecting all the colors and patterns from classic black to sunshine yellow and even utility camouflage. Pairing these shoes with an oversized denim and leather moto jacket has become our new favorite combo.

Another shoe that we used to avoid during the summer is the Birkenstock sandal. Now that shoe style has been remixed into quite the fashion statement staple. Whether you’re shopping the original suede Birkenstock sandal or mule or a high fashion updated style, we have been convinced that this will be the “ugly” shoe of the summer. Not only are they comfortable as heck, but they have proven to be very versatile. Styling this shoe in a high/low fashion style is our favorite way to go. Think midi slip skirt with lace trim and a black bralette and cashmere wrap sweater and a pair of Birkenstock-style suede mules for a chic interpretation of this less-than-pretty shoe.

Finally, we can’t ignore how much of a resurgence the Ugg boot has made. Whether it’s the actual Ugg brand boot or a rendition of it, celebrities and street style influencers have brought this shoe back with a force. Originally meant for Aussie surfers as a refuge for their feet from the freezing waves, this shoe has now made its way into high fashion closets. Not only are these shoes warm and comfy, they can be styled very easily. You can go classic and throw them on with your favorite pair of leggings or skinny style denim or you can take a cue from Bella Hadid and wear them with a pair of short-shorts and an oversized coat. We like the contrast of sexy and comfy and can’t wait to be rocking this combo all summer long. What do you think of the ugly-cute shoe trend? Should we mix the two or stay safe with simply chic. Let us know what you think and which trends you’re trying this season.
