Dickinson
This week Bunny and Kailyn sit down to talk about the Apple TV+ show Dickinson. The not-so-straightforward coming of age story about the famous poet Emily Dickinson get’s a modern twist and interpretation. The show celebrates a badass version of Emily Dickinson and we absolutely love the lead actress Hailee Steinfeld’s take on the infamous writer. Let’s see what Bunny and Kailyn had to say.
Kailyn: Well Bunny, I have to say you got me hooked on Dickinson! I truly love period dramas and comedies and this one is so delightful, I’m obsessed.
Bunny: I love the story and the way that it’s filmed and since we both really enjoyed The Great with Elle Fanning I figured you would like this one too, it’s such a fun portrayal of Emily Dickinson isn’t it?
Kailyn: I think that the interpretation is interesting. Obviously, a lot of the show is fictional, but I like the way that it’s written. Like it’s painting the part of Emily who was a badass, you know? Kind of going above and overboard to get the point across about this marvelous woman’s personality.
Bunny: It really does show Emily Dickinson as this fierce and fearless young woman. There’s one scene where she’s asked to do a chore...go fetch water or something like that and she says, “that’s bullshit!” and is asking why her brother can't do it and it shows how she really challenged gender norms.
Kailyn: It’s obvious that she’s a total prodigy and that others see this in her but still kind of try to control her. I think Jane Krakowski playing the mother is just so brilliant and absolutely such a joy to watch. It seems like she kind of resents her daughter a bit - a typical type of relationship of that time but I had read that her real mother was also very brilliant.
Bunny: I just think it's so great how the characters will step out of character to narrate or how the dialogue is more modern day language. It adds a flair to the story and the show and makes you feel like you relate to the characters even more or something. The costumes are great too, all of the period-drama costume design is so delightful and was really well done.
Kailyn: The dialogue is so quick and witty and really brings the story to life. It feels like a modern television program for sure. Same for the soundtrack, using Maggie Rogers
songs to support the series is so clever, I love it. I can’t wait for season three to come out this winter but am truly sad because I read that this will be the final season!
Bunny: I know it's so sad but it’s kind of like it has to end at some point, the coming-of-age story can’t last forever, sadly. But...season two of the The Great is on it’s way and that can console us, don’t ya think? Something to chat about next time ;)
